Opening up!

NEW buildings, high hedges, a lack of signs and confusing doorways made our 135-year-old church a hidden treasure away from the public gaze in Bovingdon. Yet it is located at the very heart of the village, just yards from its busy High Street.

With the arrival of our new minister – Mary Moody – after four years of prayerful waiting, we are inspired to share our ‘treasure’ with the villagers who often pass the church without even realising it is there. We are aware that the church is currently under-used as a resource in the community and believe that God is calling on us to open up. Our vision is that Bovingdon Baptist Church will become an open door for everyone from the very young to the oldest villagers.

We yearn to move forward into a future of greater visibility and service to both our members and the community. In pursuit of this, we’ve had the builders in. This is what they’ve been working on…

Firstly, there have been some external alterations: a new rear doorway with porch canopy; new signs front and back; railings to replace high hedges and a new seating area and garden of remembrance.

Internally, we have made improvements to benefit the church and the community. Most importantly, we have created a disabled toilet with level access to replace the old toilets, which were only accessible via steps. There is now a corridor running from the church to the new rear door so that the toilets can be reached without disturbing the occupants of the schoolroom/hall. This will also enable church and hall to be let separately, so further opening out our facilities to the village.

It’s all exciting stuff! And now Mary our minister and her family have moved into the village.

To celebrate all that is happening, we are planning an Open Day on Saturday 19th July. This will include fun and games for all the family along with refreshments and an opportunity to try out the new toilets if you so wish! Look out for posters around the village giving further details.
